Mewar Maharana Udai Singh (Part – 6)

“Maharana Udai Singh’s abode in Chittorgarh fort”

Maharana Udai Singh started living in the Chittor fort, first in the palaces of Maharana Kumbha and then lived in the palaces at the northern end of the fort, which are now famous as the palaces of Ratan Singh.

1542 – Birth of Akbar”

In Amarkot this year, Mughal Emperor Humayun’s wife Hamida Bano, gave birth to her son Jalal, who later became famous as ‘Akbar’, in Amarakot, the stronghold of King Veerasal.

1543 – “Sher Shah Suri’s ascent to Ranthambore”

Afghan Emperor Sher Shah Suri ascended the Ranthambore fort. The fortress of Ranthambore fort Bharmal Kavadia (father of munificent Bhamashah) reconciled Sher Shah Suri with money, etc., so that the fort was not destroyed. Sher Shah conquered this stronghold without bloodshed. At this time, this fort was under Maharana Udai Singh. (Sher Shah’s authority over Ranthambore for about 10 years)

1544 – Battle of Girisumel”

This war took place between Afghan Emperor Sher Shah Suri and Rao Maldeo of Marwar. Marwar was defeated. In this battle, Akhairaj Songara Chauhan, the father of Queen Jayawanta Bai, fought on behalf of Marwar and got martyred.(Some historians have described Akhairaj Songara Chauhan’s presence at the time of the coronation of Maharana Pratap in 1572 AD, which is not fair. Man singh Songara, son of Akhairaj Songara was present there at that time.)

1544 A.D. – “Sher Shah Suri’s march to Chittor”

Ibrahim Sur from the eastern part of Afghanistan was recruited in the army of the Lodis of Delhi. Ibrahim Sur’s son was Hasan, who conquered Hisar. Hasan had a son Farid, who had hunted a lion in his childhood, which gave him the name Sherkhan. This Sherkhan later became known as Sher Shah Suri.

Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun 2 times and became the emperor of Delhi. After winning the Malwa, Multan etc. region, Sher Shah defeated Rao Maldeo Rathore of Marwar in 1544 AD. It was only 4 years after Maharana Udai Singh, who reformed the dilapidated Mewar, got the news that the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri had travelled to march Mewar.

It was a rainy season. Sher Shah Suri reached Jahazpur with the army. Jahazpur was captured by Sher Shah. Sher Shah built the fortification of Jahazpur fort. As soon as Sher Shah stepped into Mewar, Maharana Udai Singh sent army troops and small battles took place, which had no result.

Maharana Udai Singh started rebuilding the portions of the Chittorgarh fort which were destroyed in Bahadur Shah’s attack. In this way, Maharana strengthened the fort. Sher Shah Suri had defeated the army of Marwar with great difficulty, so he was not ready to fight directly with Mewar.

On the other hand, Maharana Udai Singh also did not want war at this time, because the situation in Mewar was not strong enough to withstand an enemy like Sher Shah. Maharana Udai Singh also understood Sher Shah’s state of mind.

(At this time, Sher Shah Suri was accompanied by Veeramdev of Merta and Kalyanmal of Bikaner, who were friendly to Mewar. It is possible that they may have saved Mewar from direct fighting by advising Sher Shah). Maharana Udai Singh, while showing his foresight, sent the keys to the Chittor fort near Sher Shah Suri in Jahazpur. Sher Shah Suri deployed the following warlords, including 3000 gunmen, in the Chittor fort.

* Commander Shams Khan (brother of Khawas Khan) * Mian Ahmed Sarwaani * Hussain Khan Khilji

In this way, Maharana Udai Singh was the King of Mewar, but his rights were limited. Sher Shah Suri’s soldiers built a mosque in the foothills of Chittor fort, which still exists in the fort. During this time, Hussain Khan Tartardar stayed in Chittor while going to Bengal from Sindh.

May 22, 1545 – Death of Sher shah Suri

Accidentally, Sher Shah Suri was killed by gunpowder blast while attacking for the purpose of winning the Kalinjar fort. Both Mewar and Marwar princely states started taking advantage of Sher Shah Suri’s death.

1546 – “Death of Meerabai”

Meerabai

This year Maharana Udai Singh sent Brahmins to call Meerabai to Chittor, but Meerabai closed the doors of temple and suddenly she disappeared (died).

1546 – “Defeat of Shams Khan”

Afghan commander Shams Khan, stationed at Chittor with his 3000 riflemen. Maharana Udai Singh defeated Shams Khan and drove the Afghans out from Chittor.

“Army of Maharana Udai Singh”

Maharana Udai Singh’s army consisted of 19,000 soldiers and 300-400 elephants. It was not that this entire army used to live with Maharana Udai Singh. These troops were stationed in different forts of Mewar and the remaining army lived with Maharana. Before the coronation of Maharana Udai Singh, Mewar was greatly damaged, yet Maharana Udai Singh strengthened Mewar and succeeded in building such a large army.
